Trench Composting
Trench composting is an effective method of composting because it doesn’t take up any space in a small garden and it doesn’t need turning over with a garden fork. It makes a good moisture reservoir that is especially effective where there is sandy soil. Dig either a hole or trench about 2 to 3’ deep (.6 to 1m) and put the soil you remove to one side. Fill the hole with organic material like hay, leaves, weeds, garden refuse or compost. Cover it with 6 to 12" (15 to 30 cm) of the soil taken from the hole. This will help the organic matter break down and the nutrients will go back into the soil, enriching it for your plants.
